An Instagram Story normally remains visible for 24 hours from the moment it is posted. Each Story item has its own timer, so a group of photos uploaded at different times will not necessarily disappear together. After expiry, the Story is removed from the public Story tray unless the creator saves it as a Highlight.
The 24-hour timeline
The countdown begins when each photo or video is published, not at midnight and not when the creator finishes a batch. If a Story is posted at 3:20 p.m., it will usually leave the active tray around 3:20 p.m. the following day.
A viewer opened near the end of that window may find that the next item disappears while browsing. External services also need time to retrieve current data, so a Story close to expiry may no longer be available by the time a request completes.
How long is each video segment?
The maximum presentation of an individual video segment has changed as Instagram has updated Stories. Longer uploads may be divided or handled differently depending on the current app version and account. The useful distinction is that the media duration and the Story's public lifetime are separate: a short clip and a longer clip both normally expire 24 hours after posting.
Photos stay on screen for a limited viewing interval before the app advances, but viewers can pause, go back, or leave the Story. That display interval does not change the 24-hour availability window.
What happens after a Story expires
Creators can keep an automatic private Story Archive inside their own account. Archive access belongs to the account owner; it is not a public library that outside viewers can search.
A creator may select archived or active Stories and add them to a public Highlight. In that case the media can remain visible on the profile beyond 24 hours, until the creator removes the Highlight or changes the account's visibility.
Can an expired Story be recovered?
A public viewer cannot reliably retrieve a Story after it has expired unless the creator saved it somewhere public, such as a Highlight or post. Websites claiming a complete secret archive of every account should raise privacy and accuracy concerns.
If the Story is your own, check your Instagram archive and recently deleted tools. If it belongs to someone else, ask the creator for a copy rather than relying on an unauthorized archive.
